Warmer days are upon us and summer is approaching fast! Stay cool and beat the heat with these fast and free energy saving tips for your home.
Turn your thermostat up during warm weather. Keep your thermostat set to 78 degrees when at home and 85 degrees when away and use fans to circulate cool air. Ceiling fans are you best friend. They create enough air movement in a room to make it feel cooler by four degrees or more and use only about as much energy as a 100-watt light bulb.
Make sure to keep your shades and window drapes closed. Windows are the largest source of heat gain in your home. Keeping your shades closed and having strategically placed landscaping can help keep unwanted heat out of your home. Don’t forget to turn the lights off. Eliminate wasted energy by turning off lights in unoccupied rooms. Save money and energy using your appliances efficiently. Do only full loads when using your dishwasher and clothes washer. Run your appliances during off peak hours or after the sun goes down and be sure to clean your clothes dryer’s lint trap after each use. If you are thinking of replacing these appliances, buy Energy Star products. They save up to 30 percent over standard models.
