HVAC Maintenance Tips

HVAC Maintenance Tips

Before we dive into some helpful tips for maintaining your HVAC system, let’s be sure we’re on the same page with what exactly an HVAC entails. We’ve all heard the acronym; it stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. Referring to the mechanical systems and components that regulate the temperature, humidity, and air quality in a home or building, your HVAC system is critical and should be maintained properly, especially as the seasons change.

For homeowners specifically, HVAC systems are important for maintaining a comfortable indoor environment and promoting good indoor air quality. An HVAC system typically includes a furnace or boiler for heating, an air conditioner for cooling, ducts for distributing air, and vents and registers for controlling airflow. Below are some helpful tips to be sure your HVAC system is working properly. From changing air filters and cleaning the outdoor condenser unit to checking for leaks and insulating ducts and more, we’ve detailed the most critical aspects for you to keep track of!

Change air filters regularly: Air filters play a crucial role in the efficient functioning of your HVAC system. They trap dirt, dust, and other particles that could otherwise clog your system and reduce its overall effectiveness. It’s recommended to change your air filters every three months or as needed.

Clean the outdoor condenser unit: The outdoor condenser unit should always be kept free of any debris, such as leaves, twigs, and grass clippings. If these piles build up, it could restrict the airflow. To clean it, simply turn off the power, remove the fan cage, and use a soft brush to clean the coils thoroughly.

Check for leaks and insulate ducts: Leaks in your ductwork can result in a loss of energy efficiency and lead to an increase in your energy bills. Make a regular routine to check for leaks and insulate the ducts to reduce heat loss.

Have your HVAC system inspected and serviced annually: While you can work to maintain your HVAC system throughout the year, it’s best to have an HVAC professional scan your system annually. They will have the best tools and knowledge to not only clean it but make any necessary repairs to keep it running smoothly.

Install a programmable thermostat: A programmable thermostat can help you manage your HVAC system more efficiently. You can set it to automatically adjust the temperature when you are away or asleep, helping to reduce energy waste and saving you money on your energy bills.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that your HVAC system is working efficiently, reducing energy waste and saving you money in the long run. Remember, proper HVAC system maintenance is important for ensuring that it operates efficiently and effectively, and for prolonging its lifespan.
